What is an AI Assistant?

The term spans a wide spectrum. At the simple end, an assistant is a question-answering interface with no memory or tool access beyond the current conversation. At the sophisticated end, an assistant maintains context across sessions, has access to a user's calendar, email, and files, and can execute real actions like scheduling a meeting or drafting a document, blurring into full agentic AI. What distinguishes an assistant from a narrower chatbot is usually breadth of capability and persistence: an assistant is expected to help across many different kinds of tasks over an ongoing relationship with the user, rather than answering one narrow class of question. The quality bar for an assistant is less about raw model capability and more about how well it integrates with the user's actual tools, data, and context, since an assistant that can't see a user's calendar can't meaningfully help schedule anything.
