What is a Backup Automation?

A backup that only exists because a human remembered to trigger it is a backup that will eventually be missed. Automation solves the reliability problem by running on a fixed schedule regardless of who is available, and a mature setup goes further by automatically verifying the backup is restorable — not just that a file was written, but that it can actually be recovered from. Good backup automation also manages retention and rotation on its own: keeping enough historical snapshots to recover from a problem discovered days or weeks later, while pruning old backups to control storage cost. The failure mode automation is meant to eliminate is the backup that silently stopped running months ago and nobody noticed until the moment it was needed.
