What is a Compliance Automation?

Traditional compliance work often happens in a burst before an audit: someone manually screenshots configurations, pulls access logs, and assembles a binder of evidence once a year. Automation instead runs the same checks continuously — verifying encryption is enabled on a data store, confirming access reviews happened on schedule, checking that a new vendor was added to the required registers — and stores the result as a durable, timestamped record. This matters most for frameworks like SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and GDPR, where the standard isn't just 'do the right thing' but 'prove, on demand, that you did the right thing consistently over time.' A control that's correct today but undocumented is functionally worthless to an auditor six months later. Automation closes that gap by generating the evidence as a byproduct of the check itself, rather than as a separate manual documentation task. The risk in poorly designed compliance automation is treating a passing automated check as the end of the story — real compliance programs still need periodic human review of whether the automated checks themselves are still measuring the right thing as the system evolves.
