What is a Payroll Automation?

A payroll run pulls hours or salary data, applies the correct tax tables and withholding elections per jurisdiction, subtracts benefits and garnishments, and produces both the pay disbursement and the filings owed to tax authorities. Automating this means the system re-derives all of that correctly every pay period even as tax brackets change, employees move between states, or a new benefit plan is added mid-year. The compliance surface is the real difficulty: multi-state or multi-country payroll has to track different withholding rules, minimum wage laws, and filing deadlines, and a mistake doesn't just cost money — it creates regulatory exposure for the employer. Most automated payroll systems therefore lean on a specialized payroll engine or provider rather than reimplementing tax logic from scratch, and the automation layer's job is orchestrating triggers, approvals, and exceptions around that engine. Exception handling matters as much as the happy path: a missing timesheet, a retroactive pay correction, or a terminated employee's final check all need a defined automated (or automated-with-human-approval) path, not a manual workaround that breaks the audit trail.
