What is Straight-Through Processing?

Straight-through processing (STP) is the end-to-end automation of a transaction or workflow from initiation to completion with no manual intervention, re-keying, or handoff between systems at any step.

STP originated in financial services, where a trade or payment traditionally passed through multiple hands — order entry, clearing, settlement, reconciliation — each a potential source of delay and error from manual re-entry.
