What is a Business Process Automation?

Business process automation (BPA) is the use of technology to execute a multi-step business process end to end with minimal manual intervention, as opposed to automating a single isolated task.

BPA is distinguished from task-level automation by scope: rather than automating one step (send an email, update a spreadsheet), it automates the full process a step belongs to — the whole employee onboarding sequence, the entire order-to-cash cycle, the complete customer support ticket lifecycle. This requires stitching together multiple systems, decision points, and often multiple people's approvals into one coherent flow. Because BPA spans systems and stakeholders, it typically demands more upfront process mapping than simple task automation — you need to understand every branch, exception, and handoff in the existing process before you can automate it faithfully. Organizations that skip this mapping step and automate a process they don't fully understand often end up automating the wrong version of the process, one that ignores the exceptions that made up much of the manual effort in the first place.

In practice with Neotask

Neotask can run an entire employee-onboarding business process end to end — creating accounts across connected tools, scheduling orientation meetings, assigning training tasks, and notifying the manager at each milestone — coordinating dozens of individual steps across systems rather than automating just one piece of the sequence.
