What is a Branching Workflow?

A branching workflow is an automated process whose execution path splits into different sequences of steps depending on a condition evaluated at runtime, rather than always following one fixed line of steps.

Real-world processes rarely follow a single straight path — an expense report under a threshold gets auto-approved, one over it routes to a manager, and one flagged as suspicious routes to fraud review. A branching workflow encodes these conditional paths explicitly, evaluating a rule against the current data and directing execution down the matching branch. The design challenge in branching workflows is keeping the branch logic legible as conditions multiply — a workflow with a dozen nested branches quickly becomes hard to reason about or safely modify.
