What is a Legal Automation?

Legal automation is the use of software to handle routine legal work — contract drafting and review, clause extraction, compliance tracking, document assembly — that traditionally required a lawyer's manual time.

The bulk of legal automation's value sits in high-volume, low-novelty work: reviewing NDAs and vendor contracts for deviations from a standard playbook, extracting key terms (renewal dates, liability caps, governing law) from thousands of existing agreements into a searchable register, and auto-generating first drafts of routine agreements from clause libraries instead of starting from a blank page. This is fundamentally pattern matching and extraction at scale, which is why it was one of the earlier practical applications of NLP in the enterprise, well before general-purpose LLMs arrived. What legal automation does not safely do is exercise legal judgment on novel or high-stakes matters — a system can flag that a contract's indemnification clause deviates from the standard template, but the decision of whether that deviation is acceptable still belongs to a lawyer. Responsible implementations are explicit about this boundary: automate the extraction, flagging, and drafting; route anything ambiguous, high-value, or precedent-setting to human legal review with the automation's findings attached as a head start, not a final answer.
