What is a Reporting Automation?

Before automation, a weekly or monthly report usually meant someone exporting numbers from several systems, pasting them into a spreadsheet, building charts, and emailing the result around — a process that's tedious, error-prone, and often late. Automated reporting connects directly to the underlying data sources (a database, a CRM, an analytics platform), runs the same aggregation logic on a schedule, and pushes the output to the right people through email, Slack, or a dashboard, with no manual assembly step. The more valuable shift is from static to narrative reporting: rather than just handing over a table of numbers, AI-generated reports can summarize what changed, call out anomalies worth investigating, and answer a follow-up question about the data conversationally, closing the loop between "here are the numbers" and "here's what they mean." Well-built reporting automation also handles the failure cases quietly — a missing data source, a stale connection, an empty result set — by flagging the issue rather than silently sending an incomplete or misleading report, which is the difference between automation that's trustworthy and automation that erodes trust the first time it's wrong.
