What is a Security Automation?

Traditional security operations relied on analysts manually triaging alerts from firewalls, endpoint detection, and log systems — a process that doesn't scale as alert volume grows and leads to alert fatigue and missed real incidents. Security automation applies predefined playbooks (or increasingly, AI-driven judgment) to common alert types: automatically blocking an IP after repeated failed logins, quarantining a device showing malware indicators, or revoking a token after anomalous access patterns. The SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) category formalized this — connecting alert sources, enrichment data, and response actions into automated workflows so routine, well-understood threats are handled in seconds instead of the hours a manual triage takes. Human analysts are then reserved for genuinely ambiguous or high-severity incidents that need judgment. The risk in security automation is false-positive-driven overreach — an automated response that's too aggressive (locking out a legitimate user, blocking a valid IP range) causes its own outage, so automated actions are usually tiered by confidence and reversibility, with the most impactful actions still requiring human sign-off.
