What is a Vertical AI Agent?

Where a horizontal or general-purpose agent aims to handle a broad range of tasks across any domain, a vertical agent is scoped narrowly on purpose: it's built with domain-specific tools, terminology, workflows, and guardrails tuned to one field, and often with deeper integrations into the specific software that field actually uses, such as an EHR for healthcare or an MLS feed for real estate. This specialization typically produces better accuracy and reliability on that field's tasks than a general agent configured ad hoc, because the tool set, prompts, and evaluation are all built around known real-world workflows rather than generic capability. The tradeoff is coverage: a vertical agent is far less useful outside its domain, and building one well requires real domain expertise baked into its tools and prompts, not just a system-prompt label claiming specialization. Most production AI agent deployments in specific industries are, in practice, vertical agents rather than general assistants pointed at a niche use case.
