What is a Horizontal AI Agent?

The horizontal/vertical distinction is about breadth versus depth. A horizontal agent optimizes for broad applicability: it might draft emails, summarize documents, or write code equally well whether its user is a law firm, a marketing agency, or a logistics company, because its skill is the underlying task, not the domain. A vertical agent trades that breadth for domain depth — it knows the specific workflows, terminology, and compliance requirements of one industry and is far weaker outside it. Most general-purpose AI assistants ship as horizontal agents by default, since the underlying model's language and reasoning skills transfer across domains. The practical tension is that horizontal agents often need extra grounding, tools, or fine-tuning to reach the accuracy a specialized vertical agent gets for free within its niche — a horizontal coding agent still needs to be pointed at your codebase and conventions to be genuinely useful, whereas a purpose-built agent might arrive pre-loaded with that context.
