What is a Storage Automation?

As data volumes grow, manually managing where files live and how long they stay becomes impractical. Storage automation applies rules at the system level: newly created or frequently accessed data stays on fast, expensive storage; data that hasn't been touched in a defined window automatically migrates to cheaper cold or archival tiers; and data past its retention period is flagged for deletion according to a documented schedule rather than being kept indefinitely by default. This matters for both cost and compliance. Storage costs scale with volume, so automated tiering can cut spend substantially compared to leaving everything on premium storage. On the compliance side, frameworks like GDPR and SOC 2 expect documented retention schedules and evidence that data isn't retained longer than its stated purpose requires — automation is what makes that enforceable at scale rather than aspirational policy.
